For prospective students
Postdocs :
I am currently recruiting a postdoc for Fall 2026 to work on a multi-PI collaborative project in aerodynamics and aeroacoustics. Please send an email with a resume and the names of 2 references if you are interested in applying.
Graduate students :
Graduate students in my lab hold a variety of undergraduate degrees; however, all have strong mathematics and scientific computing skills, in addition to fundamental knowledge of fluid mechanics, solid mechanics, and/or dynamics. I encourage interested students to apply to the Mechanical Engineering or Engineering Mechanics PhD programs at UW–Madison, where I can fully review their applications. Please note that I only offer funding (RA positions) to PhD students, not MS students.
I currently do not have funding for new PhD students entering Fall 2026 or Spring 2027.
Undergraduate students :
The lab typically has space for 1–2 new undergraduate researchers each summer, with the expectation that they continue to work in the lab during the subsequent school year. Starting research in the summer (rather than during the busy school year) gives students time and dedication to get up to speed on their research project, while continuity over the school year allows time for results, analysis, and presentation of the material at the undergraduate research symposium each spring. Prospective students should reach out to Prof. Franck around March/April to apply for a summer position.
An ideal undergraduate research candidate for my lab is a student who wants to continue their research in graduate school. Undergraduate research gives you a glimpse of graduate research, and if you are a productive member of the lab for 12 months or longer, you may be offered co-authorship on a scientific journal article or conference presentation — which can be impressive when applying to graduate school.
Sometimes the lab can pay students for undergraduate research. Other options are to apply for the funding mechanisms below. Note that these are competitive fellowships and work best when the research mentor helps with the application and research proposal.
